Matthew 6:9b Our Father in heaven
In the opening phrases of the Lord’s prayer, before instructing us on what to pray for, Jesus calls our attention to the character of the God to whom we pray.
In calling God Father, we are acknowledging Him as our source, our maker, the One who gave us life. But He is not only our Father. He is our Father in heaven. He is the Creator of the Universe, the God of the heavens, the One who put the stars in place – great, majestic, far above us, infinitely great in wisdom and knowledge and power.
At the same time, He is also a God near at hand, who heeds the cries of His people when we turn to Him with our whole hearts in humility and faith. “Though the LORD is on high, he regards the lowly” (Psalm 138:6 NKJV). And so we can come to him with confidence, both because He is so great and also because He is so near.
